Ty Lawson on late-season ankle injury: 'I still can't run'

In news that has to be at least a little concerning to the Denver Nuggets, point guard Ty Lawson still hasn't been able to do much on his left ankle, two months after initially injuring it.

Back on April 4, Lawson suffered a high-grade sprain to the ankle that kept him out of the team's final six games. At the time of the injury, however, he was considered day-to-day, so the fact that he's still injured is surprising.

"I still can't run," Lawson told The Denver Post on Monday. "They said it's no surgery, just another three or four weeks just staying off of it, not really doing too much and it should be fine."

Another three or four weeks would push Lawson into the three month range, a significant length of time for what is still being called a sprain - the ankle remains swollen, but an X-ray and MRI both showed no structural damage.

In response to being kept off the court, Lawson indicated he plans to "go hard" this summer, more so than in previous offseasons, both because he wants to enter the season in great shape and because he'll have to make up for the lost time.

The Nuggets will enter 2014-15 with largely the same core that went 36-46 this season, so they'll need a healthy Lawson to have a chance at competing in the West. In 62 games this season, Lawson averaged career-highs of 17.6 points and 8.8 assists and also found his way to the line with far more regularity than had been his custom.
