This Day in Basketball History

Stunting Like My Daddy

On this day in 1999, Dell Curry hit is 1,000th career 3-point field goal in a game against the Golden State Warriors. These days, you can find his son Steph Curry hitting triple after triple for those same Warriors.

The senior Curry would retire in 2002 with 1,245 career threes in 1,083 games, having hit at a 40.2 percent clip. He currently ranks 36th all-time in threes made, not all that far ahead of his son, who already has 837 triples in 315 career games on 43.9 percent shooting.

So, Kevin, About That Record...

On this day in 1985, Kevin McHale set a Boston Celtics record by scoring 56 points in a game against the Detroit Pistons. He shot 22-of-28 from the floor and 12-of-13 from the free throw line, the former a mark that remains one of the league's best single-game efforts to this day.

The 56 points topped teammate Larry Bird's standing record of 53, something Bird obviously didn't take kindly to - just nine days later, Bird would set a new Celtics record with 60 points against the Atlanta Hawks, a mark that still stands today.
