Jason Terry will not join Kings this season, will rehab in Dallas

Despite being traded to the Sacramento Kings this week, Jason Terry will be spending the rest of his season in Dallas.

Terry has struggled through myriad minor injuries this year, limiting him to just 35 games with the Nets before he was traded. According to Kings coach Mike Malone, Terry will not join the team at all this season, instead opting to return home to Dallas to rehab, with an eye toward being healthier for 2014-15.

Terry will earn the remainder of his $5.6 million salary without playing, then, and it seems possible the Kings could attempt to negotiate a buy-out with him this summer. The 36-year-old veteran is on the books for $5.9 million next season, fully guaranteed, and it seems unlikely he'll want to spend one of his final seasons with a team that may or may not still be building. The Kings, however, may decide Terry's scoring ability off the bench and veteran leadership can be assets.

It's been a tough could of seasons for Terry, who has gone from winning a championship with Dallas in 2010-11 to playing for a mid-level 2011-12 Mavericks squad, a disappointing 2012-13 Celtics team, an under-performing 2013-14 Nets team and now, a rebuilding Kings squad.

He was also averaging just 4.5 points and 1.6 assists in 16.3 minutes this season, shooting just 36.2 percent from the floor.

At least he's got that ring, though, and a commemorative tattoo to match.

Should Terry's career continue next season, as expected, he'll close in on some dubious honors. Terry ranks second all-time in points for a player who has never made an All-Star team, though he's unlikely to catch Eddie Johnson, while also ranking ninth in games played for such players (a season away from ranking third) and third in minutes (about a season away from topping the list).
