Wizards will decline options on Vesely and Singleton

In a minor surprise, the Washington Wizards will not be picking up their 2014-15 options on the contracts of Jan Vesely and Chris Singleton.

The Oct. 31 deadline to exercise the options is still a few days away, but CSN Washington is reporting that the Wizards have already made their decision.

The decision isn't at all odd when you just look at the performance of the players, but rookie contracts are generally structured such that teams almost always exercise the cap-friendly options.

In the case of Vesely, the fact that he was a sixth overall pick makes his fourth-year option onerous at $4.2 million. Having averaged just 3.6 points and 3.4 rebounds while showing little improvement over two years, the 6-foot-11 Czech forward just isn't worth the price tag. Draft night remains his career highlight:

Singleton's option was for just $2.5 million since he was the 18th overall pick, but the Wizards - who want to maintain cap space for 2014 to be free agent players - deemed that too rich as well. The 6-foot-8 Florida State product has averaged 4.4 points and 3.4 rebounds over two seasons.

Both players remain with the team for 2013-14 but become expiring contracts. After Friday night's acquisition of Marcin Gortat and three others, it wouldn't be surprising to see one of these two dealt with the roster now at 18.
