L2M Report: Heat committed 2 fouls on game-winning possession vs. Pistons

Leon Halip / USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Pistons suffered a devastating loss Tuesday night that all but vaporized their playoff hopes, and they won't feel any better knowing the Miami Heat got away with two fouls on their frantic game-winning possession.

According to the NBA's last-two-minute report, both Rodney McGruder and Hassan Whiteside should've been whistled for loose-ball infractions before Whiteside's buzzer-beating tip-in.

McGruder's was the most obvious missed violation, as he straight-up flattened Ish Smith under the basket just as James Johnson's jumper was coming off rim.

Whiteside also got off scot-free - though he was far more subtle about it - when he tugged on Andre Drummond's jersey before batting the rebound off the glass to keep the possession alive. He tapped in the winning bucket two seconds later.

For what it's worth, none of the other borderline calls or non-calls during the game's nutty final 30 seconds were deemed incorrect, including a Goran Dragic nudge that helped sent Kentavious Caldwell-Pope out of bounds (it was called "marginal contact") and a not-quite-stationary Whiteside screen (on which it was determined he gave Smith "room to avoid the contact").

Still, though there was plenty of blame to go around for the Pistons' late-game collapse, the officials have to bear some of it.
