A blowout victory over the Phoenix Suns Tuesday night was overshadowed by an injury with just minutes to go in the fourth quarter to Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside.

While going up for a block on Suns rookie Marquese Chriss, the 7-footer appeared to smash his hand off the edge of the backboard, creating a gash that would force him from the game.

The team announced following Miami's 112-97 victory at the American Airlines Arena that Whiteside required 13 stitches to close the wound between his middle and ring fingers.

He cut his hand in essentially the same area two seasons ago. He required 10 stitches to repair that injury, keeping him sidelined for three games.

"It's in the awkward place in his hand," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. according to The Associated Press' Tim Reynolds. "I know everybody will be thinking, 'Oh, is this the same, is it worse, how do you compare it to two years ago?' We'll see."

Whiteside finished with a double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds on 9-of-18 shooting in 31 minutes of action prior to exiting.
