Warriors' Green proposes All-Star Game fix: 'Raise the money'

USA Today Sports

A lack of competitiveness has hurt the NBA All-Star Game in recent years, with the consensus across the league being that changes need to be implemented to improve its quality.

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green - who was named to his second Western Conference All-Star squad in New Orleans - feels more green in the pockets of the players would provide incentive for them to try harder.

"Raise the money," Green told ESPN's Chris Haynes. "I'm serious. That's how you're going to make it more competitive."

Winners of the All-Star Game take home $50,000 each, while the losers receive $25,000, according to Forbes' Robert Tuchman.

Commissioner Adam Silver stated during Friday's MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference that changes are coming to the format, although he didn't mention anything about a financial boost for players.

Instead, Silver threw out ideas that he and National Basketball Players Association president Chris Paul had discussed involving how the respective rosters are chosen, and even putting an area on the floor for players to attempt 4- and 10-point shots

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr doesn't believe changes along those lines will do much good, as it has to be on the players to find reasons to compete in the midseason exhibition.

"I think we could talk about gimmicks and talk about anything we want, whether it's the money or involves charity, it just comes down to the players taking it seriously," Kerr told Haynes. "I don't think they have to be out there taking charges, but it's a collective thing. I think they have to decide, maybe with the players association, they have to decide what they want that game to look like, and right now, it's a joke."
