76ers' Joel Embiid: Out for Season

The 76ers announced Wednesday that Embiid (knee) has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Analysis:

After the team labeled Embiid as out indefinitely early in the week after he experienced renewed swelling in his left knee, it was widely speculated that the center would be shut down for the season, and now the 76ers have made it official. It was determined after Embiid's follow-up MRI on Monday that while the bone bruise in his knee has shown considerable improvement, the slight meniscus tear that the rookie first sustained in January has become more pronounced than initially believed. With the 76ers making his long-term their main priority, Embiid is expected to visit with specialists throughout the coming months with the hope of being back to full strength for the start of the 2016-17 campaign. He'll finish what was once looking like an unquestioned Rookie of Year campaign with averages of 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 2.1 assists, 1.2 three-pointers and 0.9 steals in 25.4 minutes per game over his 31 appearances. Jahlil Okafor and Richaun Holmes will serve as the 76ers' primary centers for the team's remaining 23 contests.
