Report: Wizards, Jennings reach verbal agreement on deal

Adam Hunger / USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Wizards appear to have found a new backup point guard.

Brandon Jennings has reached a verbal agreement with the team on a deal for the remainder of the 2016-17 season, league sources told ESPN's Chris Haynes.

Jennings plans to travel to Washington on Wednesday to sign the deal once he officially clears waivers, league sources told The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Wizards can't make it official until they release another player to open up a roster spot.

The guard was waived by the New York Knicks on Monday, after he reportedly told management he'd prefer to play for a playoff team.

The Wizards have struggled to get consistent point guard play behind John Wall, with backup Trey Burke having the worst statistical season of his career.

Jennings has struggled with efficiency throughout his career, but should help improve a second unit ranked 29th in scoring.

The seven-year veteran averaged 8.6 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.6 rebounds on 38 percent shooting in 58 games with the Knicks.
