Report: Cavaliers have inquired about Mavericks' Deron Williams

USA Today Sports

The backup point guard position continues to remain vacant for the reigning NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers, with the team focusing on a certain Dallas Mavericks veteran who could potentially fill that role.

The Cavaliers have reportedly inquired about 32-year-old Deron Williams, according to USA Today's Sam Amick.

A three-time NBA All-Star, Williams has been sidelined for Dallas' last three games after spraining his left big toe last Wednesday against the New York Knicks.

He will become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and is currently earning $9 million in the final year of his contract.

The Mavericks, though, reportedly have no plans to unload Williams in a trade prior to the Feb. 23 deadline, labeling him as "equally unattainable" as shooting guard Wesley Matthews.

Williams has missed 11 games in total during the 2016-17 campaign, with his minutes as the lead guard being split with Seth Curry.

Cleveland will reportedly be holding a workout on Wednesday to audition other guards for its open roster spot, including Kirk Hinrich, Lance Stephenson, and Mario Chalmers.

In his 12th season in the Association, Williams is averaging 13.5 points, 7.1 assists, and 2.7 rebounds on 43.2 percent shooting for the 18-30 Mavericks, who are just four games out of the playoff picture in the Western Conference.
