Gay out for season following ruptured Achilles diagnosis

Sergio Estrada / USA TODAY Sports

The Sacramento Kings confirmed the diagnosis of a fully ruptured Achilles tendon for forward Rudy Gay, the team announced Thursday.

Gay will undergo surgery in the coming days and will almost assuredly miss the remainder of the 2016-17 season.

The 30-year-old swingman suffered the injury during Wednesday's loss to the Indiana Pacers. Gay drove baseline and came up lame with an apparent non-contact injury.

Gay is averaging 18.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 37.2 percent from beyond the arc as Sacramento's secondary scorer.

The Kings' playoff chase will undoubtedly suffer as a result of Gay's absence.
