Report: Nuggets to acquire, immediately waive Mo Williams

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Nuggets earned a victory Tuesday night that moved them into eighth in the Western Conference, and followed that with a roster shake-up.

The Nuggets will acquire point guard Mo Williams and cash in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks, according to a report from The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski. In return, the Hawks will receive the rights to Cenk Akyol, a Turkish shooting guard Atlanta originally selected in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft.

Williams' time in Denver won't last long, as he will be immediately waived, with his $2.2-million salary getting the Nuggets closer toward the NBA's salary cap floor, Wojnarowski reports.

The 34-year-old Williams has yet to play this season after undergoing left knee surgery. He was traded to the Hawks along with Mike Dunleavy and a future first-round pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers for Kyle Korver on Jan. 7. Williams averaged 8.2 points and 2.4 assists in 41 games for the Cavs last season.

The Hawks are expected to sign veteran point guard Gary Neal to a 10-day contract in order to fill the empty roster spot.
