Report: J.R. Smith's daughter 'doing well' despite birth at 21 weeks

Bob Donnan / USA TODAY Sports

J.R. Smith and his wife, Jewel Harris, announced they recently gave birth to a baby daughter who was unfortunately born five months premature at 21 gestational weeks - far from the usual 40.

According to TMZ Sports, nine-day-old Dakota is "doing well" despite the circumstances, and continues to receive the best possible care.

Survival rates for babies born at 21 weeks have improved, but the mortality rate is still very high, and those children often face extensive complications in their development.

On Saturday, Smith and Harris first filled fans and followers in on what their family is going through.

Thoughts continue going out to the Smith family.
