Report: Pelicans finalizing 1-year deal with Motiejunas

The New Orleans Pelicans and unrestricted free agent Donatas Motiejunas are reportedly finalizing a one-year deal worth the veteran's minimum, sources told ESPN's Marc Stein.

New Orleans waived wing player Reggie Williams to create a roster spot.

Motiejunas' representatives reportedly met with Pelicans management on Sunday, and talks between the two parties were extremely positive, according to The Vertical's Shams Charania.

The 26-year-old became a restricted free agent over the offseason, and didn't land a new contract until the Brooklyn Nets signed him to an offer sheet in December. The Houston Rockets inevitably matched, renegotiating his deal and finally locking him down to a four-year, $35-million contract.

Houston renounced its rights to Motiejunas shortly after, thus making him an unrestricted free agent and free to go where he chooses.

The market originally appeared quite sparse for someone with his chronicled injury history. Motiejunas was sent packing to the Detroit Pistons prior to last season's trade deadline, only for the deal to be annulled due to him failing a physical stemming from a herniated disc that required surgery.

In just 37 games during his final season in the Lone Star State, Motiejunas averaged 6.2 points on 43.9 percent shooting, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 14.8 minutes. The year prior, the 7-foot Lithuanian chipped in career highs across the board with 12 points, 5.9 boards, and 1.8 dimes while converting 50.4 percent of his field-goal attempts.

The Pelicans currently sit 11th in the Western Conference at 14-21, yet are only one game back of the Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets for the eighth and final playoff spot.
