Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Heads back to Cleveland

Smith (knee) will return to Cleveland on Tuesday to undergo further medical evaluation.

Analysis:

Since the Cavs' next game is scheduled for Wednesday against the Knicks in New York, it seems quite likely that Smith will be sidelined for that contest while he waits for word on the severity of his left knee injury, which he sustained in the second quarter of Monday's win over the Raptors. Fortunately for Smith, initial X-rays came back negative Monday, but a potential MRI exam Tuesday should help determine exactly how much time the veteran might miss. Iman Shumpert, Richard Jefferson and Mike Dunleavy all drew starts at shooting guard when Smith missed three games earlier this season with an ankle injury, so look for coach Tyronn Lue to deploy a committee at the position Wednesday, assuming Smith is indeed sidelined.
