Warriors donate $50K to support families of Oakland warehouse fire

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The Golden State Warriors organization announced Saturday that it will be making a donation of $50,000 to support the families affected by a fire that swept through an Oakland warehouse early Saturday morning.

At least nine people are confirmed dead, with that number expected to rise after a fast-spreading blaze broke out during a late-night dance party at the converted warehouse.

"When a tragedy of this magnitude hits this close to home, we feel it's imperative to do our small part to help our community and those impacted," Warriors president and COO Rick Welts said in an official statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families and friends during this incredibly difficult time."

The donation will be made to the Unity Council in the Fruitvale District of Oakland, which is a "nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of life, economic and educational opportunity, and health and safety of low-income families" in the area.

The Warriors also held a moment of silence for the victims prior to their game against the Phoenix Suns at Oracle Arena.
