Twelve-year NBA sharpshooter Kevin Martin didn't land a contract anywhere over the summer, so on Friday he announced his retirement from playing.

"There are so many ways to announce your after-professional career plans. My family and close friends have known since June of the direction I wanted my life to go," Martin wrote in an advertisement in his hometown newspaper, the Zanesville (OH) Times Recorder.

Martin, 33, also said that his foundation will donate $100,000 to youth initiatives in Zanesville as a thank you to the community.

A first-round pick by the Sacramento Kings in 2004, Martin may be best remembered as one of the key players moved from the Houston Rockets to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the still-debated 2012 James Harden trade.

Despite that footnote, Martin was an effective player for most of his career, averaging 17.4 points on 38.4 percent 3-point shooting in 714 career games with five teams. He played 16 games with the San Antonio Spurs last season after accepting a buyout from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
