Report: Hawks discussing extension with Dennis Schroder

The Atlanta Hawks reportedly want to anoint Dennis Schroder their point guard of the future.

Schroder is eligible until Oct. 31 for an extension off his rookie deal, and ESPN's Zach Lowe reports that the two sides are in talks on a new contract.

However, shifting salary-cap mechanics have thrown something of a wrench into their proceedings. The league is set to sign a new collective bargaining agreement that will take effect following the 2016-17 season, and that may shift the incentives for both the Hawks and Schroder.

Schroder would become a restricted free agent should he fail to reach an agreement with the team before the extension deadline.

Nevertheless, Atlanta clearly has faith in its young German speed demon. The team dealt away incumbent Jeff Teague in the offseason before handing over the reins of their offense.

The 23-year-old profiles as a lightning-quick lead guard who is excellent at getting to the basket and getting his teammates involved. His jump shot is inconsistent and he struggles with turnovers on account of his wildness, but the talent is clearly there.

In 20.3 minutes per game, Schroder averaged 11 points and 4.4 assists on 42.1 percent shooting from the field last season.
