Spurs' Kyle Anderson: Could contend for starting role with Green out

Anderson started at shooting guard in Friday's preseason finale against the Rockets, producing 10 points (4-5 FG, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, three assists and two blocks across 20 minutes.

Analysis:

After stating earlier in training camp that he hoped to find more minutes for Anderson this season, coach Gregg Popovich may have been granted his wish Friday, though in less-than-ideal fashion. Starting shooting guard Danny Green was diagnosed with a quad strain and was subsequently ruled out for three weeks, which enabled Anderson to move up to the top unit Friday. It's unclear, however, if he'll stick there when the Spurs open their regular season Tuesday against the Warriors. Jonathon Simmons (calf) also sat out Friday's game with a minor injury, but is expected to return for the opener and could ultimately prove to be a better replacement for Green given his three-point shooting ability, a skill Anderson lacks. Regardless of how it shakes out, Anderson and Simmons profile as the main beneficiaries of Green's absence, with both set to see enhanced minutes as a result.
