Celtics' Marcus Smart: Not ruled out for opener

Smart (ankle) hasn't been formally ruled out from playing in the Celtics' season opener Wednesday against the Nets, Chris Forsberg of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis:

After spraining his left ankle in the preseason finale Wednesday, Smart looked like a safe bet to miss the start of the regular season, but he's progressed faster than anticipated. He's already shed the protective boot on the ankle and was able to work out in the weight room Saturday, with coach Brad Stevens indicating afterward that the third-year guard "looked a lot better." Smart will be held out of practice Monday, but he'll likely have his status reevaluated as the opener approaches. Terry Rozier would take on an increased role off the bench in the early going if Smart is ultimately sidelined, though it doesn't sound like Smart is in line for a long-term absence.
