76ers' Covington suffers ankle sprain in preseason finale

Dan Hamilton / USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia 76ers' tenuous wing rotation may have just gotten even flimsier for opening night.

Starting swingman Robert Covington suffered a right ankle sprain during the Sixers' preseason finale against the Miami Heat on Friday night, and did not return.

The Sixers are already dealing with the absence of starting point guard Jerryd Bayless - who's expected to miss two weeks with a wrist injury - and rookie forward Ben Simmons, who'll be out until at least January with a foot fracture.

Covington averaged 12.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.6 steals last season, serving as one of the Sixers' few NBA-quality players on their way to a 10-72 finish (third-worst of all time). He struggled mightily with his shot throughout the preseason, hitting just 28.8 percent from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range.
