Fifth overall draft pick Kris Dunn is the point guard of the future for the Minnesota Timberwolves, but the future won't begin right at the start of the 2016-17 NBA regular season.

The Timberwolves are reportedly resisting trade overtures for Spanish floor general and starter Ricky Rubio, whose name was shopped several times over during the offseason, according to The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Head coach and team president Tom Thibodeau is reportedly reluctant to deal Rubio until he feels Dunn has demonstrated that he's ready to take over the reins at point guard.

As far as when that time will come, Thibodeau doesn't foresee Dunn moving into the starting lineup until at least 20 games into the season, reports Wojnarowski.

The Sacramento Kings are reportedly gung-ho on finding a way to acquire Rubio, although the package they'd be sending would have to be so enticing that Timberwolves management simply couldn't refuse the offer.

Rubio currently has three years remaining on his contract that will pay him approximately $43 million during that span. He finished fifth in the Association during the 2015-16 campaign by averaging 8.6 assists per game, along with 10.1 points and 4.3 rebounds on just 37.4 percent shooting.

Dunn was recently favored by the league's 30 general managers in a survey conducted by NBA.com to capture the 2016-17 Rookie of the Year award, garnering a staggering 46.7 percent of the votes.

The 22-year-old spent four years competing for the Providence Friars, winning Big East Player of the Year during his junior and senior seasons, as well as Big East Defensive Player of the Year.
