Report: Pelicans expect Davis to play in season opener

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Pelicans expect Anthony Davis to play on opening night, sources told Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.

The big man sprained his ankle last week during an exhibition contest in China, and was projected to be out 10-14 days.

Davis practiced with the team Wednesday, Stein reports, and could play in New Orleans' preseason finale Thursday versus the Orlando Magic.

The 23-year-old power forward averaged 24.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, two blocks, and 1.9 assists per game last season. He's been beset by injuries, though, having yet to suit up in more than 68 games in a campaign.

The Pelicans tip off the 2016-17 season at home Oct. 26 against the Denver Nuggets.
