Kerr likens MVP race to presidential election, picks Lillard in an upset

Between Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, the Golden State Warriors have the two players who have combined to win the last three MVP awards, and that's precisely why their head coach believes neither will win it this season.

"I think KD is kind of like Gary Johnson," Steve Kerr told USA TODAY's Sam Amick, likening Durant to the libertarian presidential candidate.

"You know, he’s like the third party guy. He’s going to come in and take a few votes from Steph, take a few from LeBron. Steph might be Ralph Nader, like he takes some votes from KD, takes some from LeBron. And then Damian Lillard wins the election, so that’s my forecast."

While the basketball world waits with bated breath for a response from Lillard, who will surely find some way to interpret this half-hearted MVP endorsement as a slight, it's worth pointing out that Russell Westbrook is actually the odds-on MVP favorite.

Curry, LeBron, and Durant make up the next three contenders, according to Las Vegas sportsbook Bovada, with Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, Paul George, and Blake Griffin all boasting better odds than Lillard (who shares 33-1 odds with Kyrie Irving).

As for which MVP candidate plays the role of Donald Trump, Kerr cheekily responded. "I’m not answering that. Nobody on our team."
