Bulls' Bobby Portis: Will compete for starting job at power forward

Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said Tuesday that Portis received time with the starting unit at power forward during the first day of training camp, ESPN.com's Nick Friedell reports.

Analysis:

In addition to Portis, Taj Gibson and Nikola Mirotic also rotated into the top unit, suggesting all three will battle for a starting role in camp. While Portis is the least experienced of the three, he flashed glimpses of high-end fantasy potential during his limited opportunities on the court as a rookie. Over 62 appearances, Portis averaged 7.0 points (on 42.7% shooting) and 5.4 rebounds in just 17.8 minutes per game. Portis figures to see his playing time expand further in 2016-17 regardless if he starts or not, and his excellent per-minute production will give him a shot at regularly challenging for double-doubles. The intriguing upside Portis offers might make it worthwhile to take a flier on him in the later rounds of drafts.
