Josh Smith still hoping for NBA contract: 'I have a lot left'

Three summers ago, Josh Smith was one of the most sought-after free agents on the market and landed himself a $54-million contract from the Detroit Pistons.

A year later, Smith was waived before changing teams three times in two seasons. He's hit a new low this summer, as the 30-year-old remains without a contract with October just around the corner.

Smith is hoping for another shot, though, believing he still has something to offer NBA teams.

"I’m not a guy that is oblivious to my surroundings, I know that changes need to be made," Smith told Shams Charania of The Vertical.

"It’s something that I have done wrong to now be figuring out my next move and figuring out what I need to do to be better. Even yoga this summer has helped me become one with my spirit, body and mind. I’ve done things to take steps toward bettering myself, having patience.

"I have a lot left to give to this game. I’m ready to go now. I feel like I’m in the best shape, and I’ve worked extremely hard this offseason. I’m ready."

Smith was tabbed to be the first big off the bench for the Los Angeles Clippers last season, but he struggled tremendously in that capacity. He shot 38.3 percent from the field, and the once-gifted passer tossed 41 turnovers to his 42 assists. He was promptly shipped to the Houston Rockets.

His decline extended into his Houston reunion, where Smith inexplicably hoisted 3.7 threes on 27 percent shooting in 18.3 minutes per game - a per-minute rate on par with the likes of J.J. Redick.

But again, Smith says he's willing to change and is confident he can make a difference in any role.

"I’m not a guy who feels like I have to start or play 30 minutes a night anymore. I wish for an opportunity to be able to contribute, to be a positive guy around the locker room," he said. "It has been missing from me. I’m not doubting it. I felt I have always showed support for my teammates, cheering for them, but I have to do a better job."
