Jazz's Gobert in no rush for extension: 'I'm working for the season'

Rudy Gobert's rookie-scale contract has reached its final season, with "The Stifle Tower" set to make $2.2 million in 2016-17.

The Utah Jazz have until the Oct. 31 deadline to sign the French shot-blocker to an extension to prevent him from hitting restricted free agency next summer, but Gobert isn't concerning himself with rushing into a deal for the sake of getting one done.

"Most important is this season," Gobert told reporters Monday during Utah's Media Day. "I'm working for the season."

As a restricted free agent, the Jazz would be allowed to match any offer sheets that come his way, which Gobert would welcome considering how much he wants to continue competing in Salt Lake City.

"Everybody knows I want to be here," he added.

After playing all 82 games during the 2014-15 campaign, a sprained left MCL limited Gobert to just 61 appearances last season, although the injury no longer appears to be an issue.

"After the Olympics, I tried to get back here pretty early to be able to get ready," Gobert said. "I feel great. I'm ready."

Gobert was tied for sixth in the NBA in rebounds per game (11) and third in blocked shots (2.21). He also averaged 9.1 points and 0.7 steals on 55.9 percent shooting for the 40-42 Jazz, who finished one game out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
