Bucks' Greg Monroe: Enters training camp as backup

Monroe will enter training camp as the team's backup center, Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Analysis:

After signing a three-year, $51 million contract with the Bucks a year ago, Monroe averaged a respectable 15.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, but proved to be an awkward fit in the team's frontcourt. He ended up starting 67 of his 79 games, occasionally ceding duties on the top unit to Miles Plumlee, who came on strong at end of last season. Plumlee will now open camp at the top of the depth chart, though coach Jason Kidd noted that the arrangement is subject to change as training camp progresses. Monroe is still expected to outpace Plumlee for minutes even if he does settle into a backup role, but it's clear the Bucks are willing to trade him away in order to clear the center spot for Plumlee and John Henson. We should get a better indication of Monroe's exact role once camp winds down, but it seems unlikely that his playing time will increase in his second season with the Bucks.
