Clippers' Paul Pierce: Announces 2016-17 season will be his last

Pierce announced Monday via The Players' Tribune that he will retire from the NBA after the 2016-17 season.

Analysis:

Pierce had been contemplating retirement throughout the offseason, but it was expected that he would return to the Clippers for his 19th NBA season. The 39-year-old is now officially on board for training camp and will take aim at one last shot at an NBA championship during his retirement tour. Pierce saw his production fall off a cliff last season, and while the team doesn't have many attractive alternatives at small forward, it seems unlikely that he'll be in line for heavy minutes in 2016-17. Look for coach Doc Rivers to spread the duties around at the position, with Pierce, Luc Mbah a Moute, Wesley Johnson and Alan Anderson all expected to cannibalize the fantasy value of one another.
