Thomas confident Celtics will add another star or 'really good player'

This offseason, the Boston Celtics struck out on landing superstar Kevin Durant. They did, however, manage to sign Al Horford and Gerald Green.

Starting point guard Isaiah Thomas likes the current makeup of his team, but he wouldn't put it past the organization to add more talent to put the Celtics over the top and back into title contention.

"I know (general manager) Danny Ainge and those guys in the front office aren't done," he told Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders. "We're not the championship team they had in 2008. We can always add more pieces.

"With coach Brad Stevens and the way he coaches, I know they'll find somebody. ... Guys like the way we play, guys like the system we play, and guys like coach Brad Stevens. I think if it's not another star, we can land a really good player that can help us get to the next level."

Armed with an abundance of assets, the Celtics have been linked to numerous players - including Jahlil Okafor, Nerlens Noel, Blake Griffin, and Russell Westbrook (before his contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder) - in trade rumors.

Although Durant ultimately opted to join the Golden State Warriors, Thomas isn't discouraged. He thinks it says a lot that Boston was one of five teams the former MVP agreed to meet with, and had a "legit" chance of winning him over.

The 27-year-old floor general also feels that if Horford had committed to the Celtics prior to their meeting with Durant, that "would have been enough" to sway him.

Instead of dwelling on that, though, Thomas is optimistic about what his squad can accomplish in the upcoming campaign after finishing in a tie for the third-best record in the East and making the playoffs.

"We can compete against the best teams in the NBA. We know that. We showed that. We just got to put it all together. We got a good player in Al Horford and we got a few more pieces that can help us. I think we play so hard and we play so together that it gives us a chance no matter what," he added.
