Kerr: JaVale McGee has 'real chance' to make Warriors

While the majority of their roster has been decided, the Golden State Warriors must still determine what to do with the 15th spot as they open camp in Oakland on Tuesday.

One option is JaVale McGee, who signed a training camp deal with the Warriors in late July.

"I think JaVale has a real chance here. We’ll see how he plays in camp," head coach Steve Kerr told reporters Wednesday. "But he comes highly recommended by Andre (Iguodala), who played with him in Denver. I think this is a really good opportunity for him, because he’s playing with a talented group of players and a really good environment … in which there’s nobody like him on the roster.

"I think he’s got a chance and we’ll give him every opportunity to play."

While McGee's lack of mental acuity has plagued his career, the 7-footer could find a home on a Warriors roster in desperate need of shot-blocking. Last season's starting center Andrew Bogut was traded to Dallas this summer, while backup Festus Ezeli signed a two-year deal in Portland.

McGee appeared in 34 games for the Mavericks last season, averaging 5.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks in just 10.9 minutes per game.

McGee will compete with Elgin Cook, Cameron Jones, Phil Pressey, and Elliot Williams for the final spot on the team.
