Timberwolves' Kevin Garnett: Nearing buyout with Timberwolves

Garnett (knee) is in advanced discussions with the Timberwolves for a buyout of the remainder of his contract, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis:

Garnett is on the books for $8 million for the upcoming season, but the veteran big man's relationship with the organization appears to have soured, so it seems both sides are motivated to terminate his contract. The Timberwolves memorably brought Garnett in for a second stint with the club after acquiring him from the Nets at the trade deadline in 2015, and then re-signed him to a two-year contract last summer to serve as a mentor for the team's young big men. While his on-court role was limited when he was healthy, Garnett was sidelined from late January onward last season after he succumbed to right knee soreness, a condition that still appears to be ailing him as training camp approaches. With the 40-year-old likely to part ways with the Timberwolves and seemingly no longer healthy enough to contribute at a high level, it appears his distinguished NBA career could very well be over.
