Matt Bonner pushing for 1 more season

The Red Rocket isn't ready to blast off into the sunset just yet.

Matt Bonner, 36, isn't confident about a return to the San Antonio Spurs, but the 12-year veteran has trained all summer for one last go-around in the league.

“I’m going to fight to get into the league,” Bonner told Ray Ducker of the Concord Monitor. “I’m going to fight to play one more year.”

Bonner would be hard-pressed to contribute anything substantial on the court, given that he only played 206 minutes in total last season, but he offers veteran experience and reliable outside shooting from a premium position.

Several teams have even shown interest, but Bonner remains on the market.

"There’s been interest, but nothing concrete," Bonner said. "A lot of teams are like, ‘We like Matt, we just don’t have a roster space right now, but if anything changes, he’s in the mix.’ There’s a long way to go until opening night, so I’m remaining optimistic."

His first choice would have been to return to San Antonio for an 11th-consecutive season, but the Spurs elected to restock their frontcourt with the likes of Pau Gasol, David Lee, and Dewayne Dedmon this summer.

That left Bonner without a gig, and if it continues this way, he might have to move overseas to continue his career.

"That’s one of those where I would cross that bridge when I came to it," Bonner said.
