Timberwolves' Kevin Garnett: Still no decision on playing in 2016-17

Garnett (knee) still has yet to inform the Timberwolves if he'll return for the 2016-17 season, NBA.com's Steve Aschburner reports. "I can only assume I'll be hearing from [Garnett] in the next three weeks," Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said.

Analysis:

Garnett is under contract for $8 million for the upcoming season, but after an ineffective and injury-riddled 2015-16 campaign that saw him appear in only 38 games, it's possible he'll call it quits. While the 40-year-old still provides value on the defensive end and as a mentor in the locker room to the Wolves' slew of young big men, Garnett's chronic knee pain might prevent him from playing at 100 percent health again. Former head coach Sam Mitchell regularly deployed Garnett as a starter last season when he was able to play, but he was only on the court for limited minutes, ceding most of the time at power forward or center to Gorgui Dieng and Karl-Anthony Towns. Expect that to be the case again under new coach Tim Thibodeau if Garnett does elect to return in 2016-17.
