Watch: Dwight Howard works on shooting from distance

Matthew Emmons / USA TODAY Sports

Though Dwight Howard has never shot well from the free-throw line, he was particularly unreliable this past season, converting on a career-low 48.9 percent.

Determined to fix his foul shot, Howard's trying yet another method of improvement.

Shooting coach Chris Matthews shared videos of the Atlanta Hawks big man shooting from 19 feet out, in order to build his muscle memory. Matthews says the practice will give Howard confidence at the charity stripe, which is 15 feet from the backboard.

A career 56.8 percent free-throw shooter, the 30-year-old vet could certainly use the boost. Howard stated that bettering the mark was a goal earlier this offseason.

Early in his 12-year career, Howard worked with a sports psychologist, who instructed him to sing songs at the line to curb anxiety.
