Bogut slams refs: 'That's FIBA basketball'

One pivotal foul call robbed Australia of their first-ever medal in Olympic men's basketball.

Spain used a pair of late free throws from Sergio Rodriguez to squeak past Australia 89-88 in the bronze-medal match on Sunday.

After the final buzzer a disheartened Andrew Bogut ripped into the officiating for ultimately deciding the game.

"Questionable calls all game," Bogut told reporters. "That's FIBA basketball. Wouldn't expect anything less from the refs."

"They got some tough calls towards the end," Bogut continued. "Patty’s call towards the end comes three seconds after the ball hits the rim, so (the officials) are obviously thinking about something.

"It’s disappointing that it has to go that way, and disappointing that the play before, Aron Baynes gets an armbar foul (while guarding Pau Gasol) in a one-point game with 20 seconds left. It’s absolutely ridiculous. They controlled the tempo of the game, and it wasn’t in our favor."

The two sides traded basket after basket right down to the final minute, but the last two points of the game came from the charity stripe. With six seconds left, Rodriguez drove to the basket for a layup and was met by Aussie guard Patty Mills, who tried to take a charge.

Mills made minimal contact with Rodriguez on the play, but a blocking foul was called on Mills after Rodriguez's layup attempt rimmed out.

Spain went ahead on Rodriguez's foul shots, which proved to be the game-winning play. Australia got the ball back down one with five seconds left, but the Boomers couldn't generate a clean look at the basket.

Bogut didn't see the floor for the majority of the fourth quarter, which also traces back to officiating. He fouled out in just 14 minutes and had to watch his team close out the game wearing a sunken expression on the bench.
