Trail Blazers' Meyers Leonard: Could be limited during training camp

Leonard (shoulder) said that he hoped to be at full strength for the start of the regular season, but suggested he could be limited in training camp, NBA.com's Cody Sharrett reports. "As far as a timeline, it's kinda hard to put an exact date on it," Leonard said. "We're going to back to see the doctor on August 1, and we'll have definitely a much better [idea] of when, let's say a one-to-two week window, will be."

Analysis:

Leonard underwent surgery in late March to repair a dislocated left shoulder, and was given a six-to-eight month recovery timetable. While it appears Leonard is progressing as expected, his rehab may extend to the longer end of that timetable, as he said that he hopes to resume full-contact activities in mid-October, which would give him about two weeks to prepare for the start of the regular season. With Al-Farouq Aminu expected to see more time at power forward in 2016-17, Leonard will have to settle for backup duties, but should still be a fixture in the rotation due to his prowess from three-point range, a rare trait for someone who checks in at 7-foot-1. He'll battle Ed Davis, Festus Ezeli and Noah Vonleh for playing time behind projected frontcourt starters Aminu and Mason Plumlee.
