Report: 76ers' front office split on Waiters

The Philadelphia 76ers are split on interest in unrestricted free-agent shooting guard Dion Waiters, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Keith Pompey.

Some of the concern, Pompey reports, stems from off-floor incidents center Jahlil Okafor dealt with last season. Not wanting to see more of their players in problematic circumstances, some in the 76ers' front office apparently are worried that Waiters' turbulent history in his hometown could pose potential pitfalls.

Waiters' brother was murdered in a South Philadelphia shooting in March. As a high school standout in the city in the late 2000s, two of Waiters' cousins and a close friend were killed in separate shootings.

Meanwhile, Waiters' use of former Sixers' GM Sam Hinkie's tagline "trust the process" in an Instagram video was not an attempt to lobby the team, a source told Pompey.

Waiters is an unrestricted free agent after the Oklahoma City Thunder rescinded their qualifying offer to the guard this week. He attached the "process" line to a video he posted of himself working out on Tuesday, but the source told Pompey it's simply a mantra Waiters and his trainer share.

The Brooklyn Nets were also reported to have interest in Waiters.
