Grizzlies' Deyonta Davis: Lands record deal for second-round pick

Davis (foot) agreed to a rookie contract last Sunday with the Grizzlies worth $4 million over three fully guaranteed years, Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports reports.

Analysis:

The $4 million guaranteed is the most ever for an American-born second-round pick, an honor quite deserving for Davis, a freshman out of Michigan State who was viewed by many as a potential lottery pick before falling out of the first round in the June draft. Davis also benefited from the NBA's rising salary cap to land the bigger guarantee, but the Grizzlies will be able to retain his Bird rights as part of the trade off in his agreement to the deal. The 6-foot-11 Davis is already a formidable shot blocker, but after sitting out the summer league while dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, he may have missed out on some key time to develop his offensive game. As such, Davis could come to training camp a little behind the rest of the Grizzlies' big men and might not crack the rotation until later in the season.
