Pistons' Jon Leuer: Will likely open ahead of Ellenson on depth chart

Coach Stan Van Gundy recently indicated that Leuer would rank ahead of rookie Henry Ellenson on the depth chart to begin the upcoming season, Rod Beard of the Detroit News reports.

Analysis:

Like Leuer, Ellenson is regarded as a power forward who can stretch the floor, but he's not nearly as much of a threat from three-point range at this stage of his career. Leuer hit 38.2 percent of his three-point tries in 2015-16 and holds a strong 37.5 percent mark over five NBA seasons; conversely, Ellenson nailed just 28.8 percent of his attempts in his lone college campaign at Marquette, despite benefiting from the shorter line. The Pistons intend to use the upcoming season as a developmental one for Ellenson, so look for Leuer, who inked a four-year, $42 million deal this offseason, to be a mainstay on the second unit.
