Report: LeBron's delay to re-sign unrelated to J.R. Smith contract status

The fact that LeBron James has yet to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers is not related to J.R. Smith's outstanding contract status, according to Cleveland.com's Chris Haynes.

With NBA news slowing down in mid-July, the only superstar yet to put pen to paper is James - though it's quite likely he is simply enjoying his summer. He is in no rush, according to Haynes.

Last year, he did not agree to terms with the Cavs until July 9, amid pure speculation that he would wait out the team's deadlock with Tristan Thompson - a situation that wasn't resolved until October.

Smith remains unsigned, although Cavs GM David Griffin said this week that he's "very confident" a deal will get done.

When James does commit, he is expected to sign another "1-and-1" contract - one year, plus the option - in order to reap the next salary cap windfall in 2017. However, because of a cap quirk, doing so could cost him about $3 million less than if he signed elsewhere - which he has stated he has no intention of doing.
