Injury or not, Philadelphia 76ers rookie Ben Simmons has earned more than his fair share of criticism for sitting out his last two summer league games.

"You're 19," NBA legend Isiah Thomas said on NBA TV. "Earn your money, get on the floor and play."

Sixers head coach Brett Brown quickly came to the defense of Simmons upon hearing Thomas' remarks, stating that the first overall pick wanted to play, but was told by team doctors to rest.

"This is our direction, it has nothing to do with him," Brown told ESPN.

Given that Philadelphia is now in the consolation round of the tournament, it would appear foolish to risk having Simmons aggravate the injury in a meaningless contest.

Prior to being injured, Simmons proved to be one of the most talented players in summer league, even drawing comparisons to LeBron James from a fellow first-rounder.

Through three games, the 19-year-old forward has averaged 11.3 points, seven rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.3 steals, showing off his strong passing ability as well as his capacity to score in a variety of ways.

It's currently unknown whether Simmons will suit up in Philadelphia's final summer league game on Friday.
