The Cleveland Cavaliers made history en route to winning this year's NBA championship, which was enough to earn them the 2016 Best Team ESPY award.

Also nominated were the Pittsburgh Penguins, Kansas City Royals, Denver Broncos, Alabama Crimson Tide, UConn Huskies, and Villanova Wildcats.

Cleveland swept its way through the opening two rounds of the playoffs against the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks. The team then withstood a valiant effort from the Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference in six games before advancing to the NBA Finals for a second year in a row.

All hope looked lost after the Golden State Warriors took a commanding 3-1 series lead, but on the back of memorable performances from LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, the Cavaliers bounced back and became the first team to ever overcome such a deficit and end the city's 52-year championship drought.

Accepting the award on behalf of the team on Wednesday were James, Irving, Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, Channing Frye, Richard Jefferson, J.R. Smith, Dahntay Jones, and Iman Shumpert.
