Just hours into free agency, Detroit Pistons president Stan Van Gundy crossed off one need on his wish list.

The Pistons agreed to a three-year, $18-million deal with point guard Ish Smith early Friday morning.

Van Gundy stated earlier this week that Detroit was searching for a backup point guard, and the 27-year-old Smith would serve that need sliding in behind starter Reggie Jackson.

Smith split time between the New Orleans Pelicans and Philadelphia 76ers last season, averaging 12.6 points, 6.5 assists, and four rebounds in 77 games (53 starts).

Pompey reported that Smith wanted to re-sign with the 76ers, but got tired of waiting for a call and opted to sign with Detroit.

The Pistons have been busy this week, as they traded Jodie Meeks to the Orlando Magic and are on the verge of completing a five-year deal with Andre Drummond.
