At his last stop in Phoenix, head coach Jeff Hornacek had three starting-caliber point guards and struggled to keep them all happy.

Hornacek has the opposite problem now that he's in New York. He doesn't have one proven point guard - only two wild cards (Jerian Grant, Tony Wroten), a fine backup in Langston Galloway, and a 34-year-old in Jose Calderon.

So naturally, Knicks general manager Steve Mills is looking for a dependable distributor this summer.

"It’s clear we need a lead guard, someone that can really carry the load, day in and day out. That’s something that I think is one of our biggest needs," Mills said on an MSG special, as relayed by ESPN's Ian Begley.

In that mold, some members of New York's front office are interested in Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson, Begley reports. However, given that Clarkson is set to become a restricted free agent, the Lakers will likely retain their electric combo guard.

The 24-year-old Clarkson played his way into becoming a fixture on the Lakers after being drafted with the 46th pick in 2014. Clarkson averaged 15.5 points and four rebounds per game this season, while shooting a capable 34.7 percent from deep.

The Knicks, like every other team with a hole at point guard, will likely have interest in Mike Conley, according to Begley.

If Arron Afflalo and Derrick Williams decline their respective player options, the Knicks could enter free agency with as much as $40 million in cap room.
