Silver: Referees get roughly 90 percent of calls right

NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes the addition of the last-two-minutes report has shown that officials make the correct call the vast majority of the time.

"Roughly 90 percent - they get it right," Silver told ESPN. "Now, of course, I'd like 90 percent to be 100 percent. And so would they. But what these reports also show, what fans already know is, human error is part of this game, and the best athletes in the world make mistakes. And coaches occasionally make mistakes. Officials do, too."

Officials have come under fire several times this postseason, as several key plays have either went uncalled or called incorrectly. James Harden's game-winning shot against the Warriors in Round 1 should not have counted, as he committed an uncalled offensive foul. There were also five non-calls in Game 2 of the Oklahoma City-San Antonio series.

Silver acknowledges missed calls are not ideal, but the addition of the last-two-minutes report adds more transparency.

"My goal is for it not to be a story line. There's no question about that," Silver said. "And even if you ask our officials, their goal is to not be noticed."

Several players and coaches have been skeptical of how much releasing the report actually changes anything.

"I think it sends a bad message to our fans of thinking the game is only won in the last two minutes," LeBron James told Jason Llyod of the Akron Beacon Journal last month. "A play in the first quarter is just as important as a play in the last four seconds. That’s how playoff basketball is played, that’s how the game of basketball should be played."

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich also said the last-two-minutes report doesn't change anything, but understands why the league implemented it.

"For the people involved, it's very frustrating because there's nothing you can do about it," Popovich said earlier this month. "So it's sort of an odd practice in that sense, but I think they just want to have transparency."
