Colangelo putting 76ers' rebuild in 'rearview mirror'

Philadelphia 76ers general manager Bryan Colangelo is bringing a new way of thinking into an organization that has become synonymous with losing the past four seasons.

"It's time to put rebuilding in the rearview mirror and start building," Colangelo told Tom Moore of the Burlington County Times. "It'll become obvious the steps we take will have favorable consequences. We want to put ourselves in a position to make incremental steps forward. There's not a magic bullet unless there's an incredible deal out there to move things along."

Colangelo took over earlier this month following the resignation of Sam Hinkie, who prioritized losing as a means to receive the highest draft pick in an attempt to rebuild.

Despite netting a top-three selection in each of the last two drafts, the 76ers finished with the NBA's worst record this season. In an effort to improve the roster, Colangelo hopes to be active on the free-agent market this summer, though he acknowledged that luring players into a organization coming off a 10-win season may be a challenge.

"A team in our situation probably needs to be willing to overpay," Colangelo said. "There's a line you have to draw. Assess where you are and do basketball evaluations if a guy comes and justify it, analytically.

"A lot of things go into the selection of a player you sign as a free agent. If it means we overpay, maybe we go on a shorter term for higher dollars. One thing we don't want is to be locked in to mediocrity."
