Nowitzki confirmed Tuesday that he plans to return to the Mavericks next season, Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports. "I definitely won't retire," Nowitzki said. "That's out of the question. I felt great this year."

Analysis:

Considering he'll turn 38 in just over a month, the question of whether Nowitzki would consider retiring is a fair one, but the future Hall of Famer appears intent on returning for at least one more season. Nowitzki was in vintage form for most of the past season, starting 75 games and averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 31.5 minutes while shooting 44.8 percent from the field and knocking down 36.8 percent of his three-point attempts. The banged-up Mavericks bowed out to the Thunder in the first round of the playoffs, but Dallas figures to be a buyer on the free-agent market this offseason in hopes of gearing up for at least one more playoff run. Nowitzki holds a ludicrously cheap $8.7 million player option for his contract next season, which he'll likely exercise unless he and the Mavs end up working out a new deal.
