Report: Kings' Seth Curry to decline option, become free agent

Shooting guard Seth Curry will become the second Sacramento Kings player to decline his player option for the 2016-17 season, The Vertical's Shams Charania reports.

Kings power forward Quincy Acy is also expected to decline his option.

Curry, like Acy, is on a minimum deal that would pay him $1 million next season. With the salary cap set to spike, the going rate for a minimum contract will also rise, meaning the only risk Curry runs in entering free agency is not getting a guaranteed deal.

After a season in which he performed admirably in limited minutes off the Kings' bench, that's a calculated gamble. The 25-year-old Duke product averaged 6.8 points and 1.5 assists (15.6 and 3.5 per 36 minutes) across 44 games, shooting 45.5 percent from the field and a blistering 45 percent from 3-point range.

He was particularly hot down the stretch, averaging 15.2 points and 3.8 assists with a .468/.484/.909 shooting split over his final 11 games, scoring at least 20 points in four of them.

Since-deposed head coach George Karl also called Curry the Kings' best on-ball defender, though that was never quite reflected in his playing time.

The deadline for Curry to formalize his option decision is Saturday.
