Perkins joking about Durant confidentiality agreement

New Orleans Pelicans center Kendrick Perkins decided to have some fun with reporters in Boston on Wednesday night, but he may not have taken into account the media environment of 2016.

Perkins admitted to The Oklahoman's Anthony Slater that his comment about good friend Kevin Durant forcing him to sign a "confidentiality form" after a chat regarding free agency was a joke.

While common logic may have been able to deduce as much, the ever-increasing hyperbole and cutthroat nature of NBA free agency - along with Perkins' deadpan delivery - left doubt among some.

"I can’t answer that," Perkins said when reporters pressed him Wednesday about Durant's summer plans. "I want to, but I can't. I mean, I don’t know. I do know, but I don't know."

Perkins remains close with Durant from his time as an Oklahoma City Thunder teammate, and says he talks to the 2014 NBA MVP once a week.

Durant's free agency this summer figures to surpass, in sheer scope, the LeBron James sweepstakes of 2010. The rising salary cap could have a two-pronged effect, however. While it will allow far more teams to try and pitch the seven-time All-Star, it could also encourage Durant to remain with the Thunder on a one-year deal in an effort to take advantage of the further cap spike in 2017.
